Sweet, sweet beginnings

Our hand-crafted doughnuts and premium coffee is meant to bring you joyful moments wherever you go. Krispy Kreme came from humble beginnings with a single shop to having a global footprint – this is how our story of creating magical moments began…

The good hand that
made sweet history

Krispy Kreme’s story started in the 1930s. Legend has it that a young Vernon Rudolph, the man responsible for these heavenly delights, won the secret yeast-raised doughnut recipe in a poker game with a French Chef in New Orleans. We’re not sure how historically accurate that is but it makes a great story!

He then rented a building in Old Salem in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and sold Krispy Kreme doughnuts to grocery stores originally as a wholesaler. However, the delicious scent of cooking doughnuts drifted into the street and was too difficult to ignore, causing passers-by to stop and ask if they could buy hot fresh doughnuts.

Vernon saw this as an opportunity to create a retail business and cut a hole in the wall of the building to start selling directly to customers.

1930's

They kept coming
back for more...

Customers would keep coming back as they knew that they could always enjoy the delicious taste, regardless of which store they bought the doughnuts from. To ensure consistency, Vernon developed the Krispy Kreme automatic doughnut cutter machine to ensure delivery of the perfect mix every time. This was the prototype of what you see in factory stores today. It is this incredible machine that gives our doughnuts their perfect shape day in and day out.

1940's - 1950's

The legacy lives on in a globally loved brand

Sadly, in 1976 Vernon passed away, however, his beloved Krispy Kreme still lives on today.

Krispy Kreme can even be found in the Smithsonian’s Institute’s National Museum of American History and is a testament to Vernon’s vision for the brand with Krispy Kreme being considered an American Icon.

1970's - 1990's

Krispy Kreme has found a
new home in SA

South Africa is proud to be the first African country to be serving the most delicious doughnut in the world. This iconic brand’s first store opening in South Africa was in Rosebank, Johannesburg with more stores being set up every year.

We’re still spreading joy with the Original Glazed® Doughnuts that started it all and new limited-edition treats!

Krispy Kreme is in 26 markets/countries internationally.

The first Krispy Kreme store outside of North America was opened in Australia.
Krispy Kreme International’s 500th store opening outside of the USA was in Mexico.
South Korea was the first Asian market that Krispy Kreme entered.
Saudi Arabia is the Middle East country with the most Krispy Kreme stores.

Thailand’s sitting princess attended the Krispy Kreme Grand Opening event.

Proceed to checkout and choose the Krispy Kreme store you would like to collect your order from, as well as the date and time. Orders will be ready 48 hours after payment is made.

Pay safely and securely online with PayFast, South Africa's most trusted payment gateway.

04.

Collect your doughnut order from your selected Krispy Kreme store, sit back, and bite into delicious, light-as-a-cloud doughnut-y joy.

Remember:

Krispy Kreme South Africa does not offer direct delivery. All orders are for collection/pick-up only, at your nearest Krispy Kreme store. Kindly note that your order is only confirmed upon successful payment and the receipt of an order number. You will only be able to collect your order in-store with proof of purchase (your receipt with your order confirmation). Please note that orders will only be available for collection 48 hours after being placed and payments have cleared.
